Domestic Jealousy is an installation centered on Iwanaga-hime, enshrined at Sengen Shrine near the crater of Mt. Omuro in Izu Kogen, and her younger sister Konohanasakuya-hime, enshrined on Mt. Fuji. In the myth, Ninigi-no-Mikoto chooses the beautiful Konohanasakuya-hime as his wife and sends Iwanaga-hime back to their father, Oyamatsumi-no-Kami. The work rereads this story as one of jealousy between sisters.

In the narrative conceived for the work, Iwanaga-hime returns to her room, looks at herself in a mirror, and, shocked by the face reflected there, throws the mirror away. The black lacquer wall at the rear of the installation was conceived as that mirror: a distorted, uncertain surface that does not return the world faithfully, but reflects it through Iwanaga-hime’s shaken gaze.

The red cloth represents Iwanaga-hime’s jealousy. Upon it are a volcanic rock symbolizing Iwanaga-hime and cherry branches symbolizing Konohanasakuya-hime. During the exhibition the cherry branches gradually wither, while cherry-scented incense lingers in the room. The time in which the flower associated with the younger sister’s beauty disappears upon the red field of jealousy becomes part of the work itself.

The original short story Domestic Jealousy, written for the installation, recasts the myth as a human story of two sisters. The work’s title derives from this emotional structure.
