CONCEPT

EUREKA (2002) is an installation using panels, wood, cloth, acrylic mirror, pebbles, bells, light, and water, and is completed through the viewer’s passage through a darkened space. At Gallery Kumo in Hakui, vision was severely restricted; textures underfoot, faint sounds, changes in floor level, and light leaking through cloth became clues through which the body searched for its own position.

As the installation unfolds, perception is repeatedly rewritten. The sensation and scraping sound of pebbles give way to a slope that shifts the body’s balance; small bells sound as the body parts thin cloth. At the end, a shallow basin of water and a slit-like acrylic mirror return the viewer not as a whole body but as a narrow fragment. The work asks when perception becomes fixed as “the world,” and where the self that carries that perception comes to be established.

After crossing darkness, the viewer meets an incomplete self-image and is left with the unresolved question of who is looking. The title names not the discovery of an answer, but the instant when fragmentary sensations accumulate and one suddenly feels that one understands. “I am here” and “who is that I?” arise together, and this unresolved pair passes directly into Kuu.

CONCEPT
