Kuu (2003) is a large elliptical work in which a dark painted field is covered by a reflective acrylic sheet. The viewer is reflected, yet the image sinks into the dark surface and merges with the surrounding room and window light. The mirror therefore does not clearly confirm the self; the closer one looks, the less certain the boundary between self-image and environment becomes.

The work develops the reflective structure of Every Colour You Are and the fragmentary self-image encountered at the end of EUREKA. Here that question is concentrated at the scale of the body. Notes from the graduation project state: “There is an ‘I’ in the mirror. There is an ‘I’ within me, watching the ‘I’ that is watching the ‘I’ in the mirror.” The attempt to confirm the self instead divides its position between seeing and being seen.

“Kuu” does not mean an empty nothingness, but a state in which an image appears without becoming fixed as existence. The viewer can see the self but cannot completely say that it is there. By doubting the premise that a mirror transparently returns the self, the work shifts the question of image toward the body and material conditions—a problem taken up next in Blood Wall Blood Mirror.
