CONCEPT

Mirror Work Series (2004–) consists of circular and elliptical works combining acrylic paint, pigments, mineral pigments, hemp paper, glass, frosted glass, lace, and related materials in order to deliberately reduce the precision of reflection. Over time the transparent glass layer was removed, and the pigment surface itself was coated and polished until the support became reflective. The image does not return clearly: it sinks, distorts, or rises with a slight delay.

The method grew from the memory of a small mirror at the end of the hallway in my childhood home. Seen at night, it did not simply confirm the self; it seemed to open onto another depth, and the figure there could not be fully secured as “me.” Through Every Colour You Are, Kuu, Blood Wall Blood Mirror, and R.D.S., that unease became a way of treating the mirror as a site where an image occurs rather than as a neutral object.

An ordinary mirror appears to return a unified self immediately. These works hold the image in an intermediate state: it appears without becoming fixed. Moving closer makes it rise; stepping away lets it sink into color; changes of light and bodily position alter its contour. The question is therefore not the accuracy of reflection, but the conditions under which an image emerges through the relation of light, matter, and body. Here the mirror became a working method, opening toward Mirror Work — lace — and later installations in which the surrounding space itself entered the problem.

CONCEPT

《Mirror Work Series》(2004

その感覚は《Every Colour You Are》《クー》《Blood Wall Blood Mirror》、R.D.S.
