In 2016, sixteen mirror-based objects made around 2004 were exhibited at Kochuten Books and Coffee in Izu-Kogen. Works using circular and elliptical frames, colored mirror surfaces, lace, and other materials were placed within the existing interior among bookshelves and furniture. The mirrors reflected not only viewers but fragments of the furniture, windows, and natural light.

The exhibition title derives from Atsushi Miyakawa’s Mirror, Space, Image. In these works, the mirror was treated not as an instrument for returning an image accurately, but as a surface whose reflections are altered through color and other interventions. Bringing the different mirror works together in one room allowed multiple reflected images to coexist within the same space. The plural “mirrors” in the title also reflected the idea of treating the works not as a single unified group, but as objects with distinct characters.

Kochuten’s curved wall, bookshelves, furniture, and light entering through the windows were not only the setting for the exhibition but also subjects reflected in the works. Placing the mirrors in a functioning bookshop and café rather than a white-cube gallery brought their relation to an everyday interior into view. From August 20 to 22, Namegai Photo Studio: The Self and Myself in the Mirror was held as a program during the exhibition, with photography by Chiye Namegai.
